The Founding of hear.

My vision with hear. is simple: restoring confidence through personalised hearing care in Lincoln, Canterbury. As a small lean independent clinic you have access to the best hearing care at fair prices, managed by an audiologist who cares deeply. I strongly believe hearing health should be taken seriously and not trivialised. Everything at hear. is transparent and simple. Just like the name.

Meet The Owner, Matthew

I am a thoughtful creator with a strategic mind and a warm heart. I build systems that work—but only if they feel human. I lead with clarity, collaborate with care, and design with emotional resonance. My clinic, my brand, and my workflow all reflect this balance of precision and presence.

Why audiology?

Hearing is so important – so personal, and helping people every day with their hearing challenges feels like I am doing something meaningful and authentic with my education and training. My chosen partners, Phonak, Starkey, MED-EL, and Cochlear give me access to, in my opinion, the best hearing technology currently available. From a technical point of view this is definitely appealing. And from a clinical point of view I am forever learning about ways to push hearing aids to their limits so that my customers get the most benefit out of their investment. If that means music sounds a little better, or a person feels a little more relaxed in a social setting – that’s what I want to see. That’s why I chose audiology.

What education, what training?

I hold a Master’s of Clinical Audiology and am a registered full MNZAS member. I completed my audiology degree at the University of Canterbury and completed my final clinical exam in 2021. My path into it was a little backwards, admittedly, just because I already had a PhD. Normally, one does that the other way around; but my PhD came about a decade earlier, at the University Otago School of Medical Sciences (Pharmacology). It was in a related field: balance and cognition, which was part of my earlier decision to take up audiology. I wanted the PhD to be relevant no matter what. For this reason, I maintain an active interest in vestibular audiology (balance) which means, besides hearing care, I also play a part in balance assessments and referrals. I am also a certified Lyric specialist.

Outside of work?

Motor racing. Definitely a petrol-head (and an EV-head?) My Ford Falcon XR6 got retired from road duties and turned into a race car. My oldest son is getting into the sport now through the Canterbury Car Club. I like working on the car, most of the work has been done here at home (I’ve had help). I also raced a Ducati that I did up as an insurance write-off. Otherwise, I mostly enjoy chilling at home with my two sons and wife in Leeston.
